The remap of the Hillux 2.8L Diesel promises significant gains in performance. However, are these gains just theoretical, rather than practical for use at work?
In this article you can check out our Drag Race which shows exactly how different the performance of a Hillux is with our software Stage 1 Strike Brasil and the original version.
Discover the Hillux 2.8L Diesel 177CV
Launched in 2015, the Hillux, according to the automaker, arrived with a new four-cylinder turbo engine, variable geometry turbocharger (TGV) and intercooler.
Despite this model having 200 cylinders less than its previous version, Toyota claims that there was an increase of 6 hp, 22% in torque in the manual version and 25% in the automatic version.
Performance in this version was achieved with improvements to the injection and intake systems. In fact, the new six-speed transmission offers a more vigorous start in first gear, while offering greater fuel economy in sixth.
The truck's towing capacity has also been improved, being able to support up to 3,5 tons, depending on the version. While the driver can also adapt driving in two modes:
- ECO: smooth acceleration for greater economy;
- Power: greater engine response, ideal for overtaking, transporting heavy loads or steep climbs.
However, even though the model has several improvements in performance, the remap of Hillux 2.8L Diesel 177hp it can transform it into an even more powerful vehicle for work or for greater safety on the roads.
How remap works on pickup trucks
Remap in pickup trucks is a change in the Electronic Injection Center (ECU) software. This allows you to adjust the vehicle to increase its performance for each need.
To do so, 4 steps are required:
- A specialized professional accesses the center;
- The data is read;
- New software is created with the desired parameters;
- Software recording in the vehicle and compliance testing.
Gains can be achieved only with software modifications, called Stage 1, or with small mechanical changes to extract even more performance, called Stage 2 remap.

Drag Race: putting the remap to show its potential
To test the remap gains in trucks on the Hillux 2.8L, we carried out a Drag Race test with one in its factory configuration and another with our Remap Stage 1 Strike Brasil.
In our Drag Race, we pitted the remap of the Hillux 2.8L Diesel against its original, unmodified version. To evaluate performance gains, we use three types of tests:
- 0-100km / h: time needed to reach 100km/h after starting off;
- Half-mile: total time needed to reach half a mile (about 800m)
- Retake Test: time needed to go from 80 to 140km/h.
Power difference between trucks
Before we see the test results, let's find out the difference between the remap of the Hillux 2.8L Diesel and its 100% original version.
The original Hillux has 177 horsepower and 45,9 KGF/m of torque. On the other hand, Hillux with our Stage 1 software:
- Power: 220 HP (+43 HP)
- Torque: 57 KGF/m (+11,1 KGF)
- Limiter off
- EGR Valve Solution
- Pedal delay removal
The remap of the Hillux 2.8L Diesel, as can be seen, generated almost a 25% gain in power and torque.
However, is this difference just theoretical or does it have real practical impacts on driving? For that, let's go to the tests!
Test results: Hillux Remap vs its original version
Watch the full video on our YouTube channel to see how the Hillux remap tests went:
It is worth noting that in our Drag Race we use Drag, a high-precision GPS device with a 10hz update rate. This equipment makes its measurements based on the driver's response. Therefore, even if one of the vehicles leaves early, the data is not affected.
0-100km/h results
This type of test is very interesting for evaluating the practical gains in vehicle torque, since starting has a great impact on how quickly a vehicle can start after leaving the stationary state.
In the 0-100km/h time we had the following results:
- Hillux with Remap Stage 1 Strike Brasil: 10,28s
- Hillux 2.8L Diesel 177CV (Original): 12,97s
- Difference: -2,69s
In short, the Hillux remap allowed the vehicle to reach 100km/h almost 3 seconds ahead of its original version.
Half-mile
The half-mile test allows you to check power more accurately, as it allows you to analyze the ability to maintain acceleration. With this type of test, we had the results:
- Hillux with Remap Stage 1 Strike Brasil: 27,5s
- Hillux 2.8L Diesel 177CV (Original): 30,5s
- Difference: -3,1s
Retake Test
Finally, the recovery test shows how the Hillux remap helps the truck in real situations such as overtaking. Thus, the conclusion of the test was:
- Hillux with Remap Stage 1 Strike Brasil: 14,21s
- Hillux 2.8L Diesel 177CV (Original): 19,71
- Difference: -5,5s
In the socket test the difference was even greater than in the previous ones! Here, the Hillux remap offered a gain of 5,5 seconds, enough to open a gap of about 2 carts between it and the original Hillux!
Is it worth remaping trucks?
With our tests, It is noticeable that the remap of the Hillux 2.8L Diesel brings gains in practically all aspects with a large margin compared to its factory version. However, it is not just in numbers that remap shows its benefits.
Our Drag Race showing the Remap of the Hillux 2.8L Diesel makes clear the performance gains that the truck has. This gain in performance is certainly useful (as well as very interesting) in several situations. For example:
- Makes driving on dirt roads easier;
- Fast overtaking;
- Powerful trailer;
- Greater load capacity without compromising engine response; between others.
With the support of our Drag Race data, we can conclude that the remap also brings advantages in:
- Economy: with less energy to reach speeds, fuel consumption is lower in some cases, depending on factors such as driving style, track, tires used, among others;
- Safety: with the engine's quick response to the driver's commands, overtaking and tackling complicated terrain becomes much easier and safer;
- Comfort: Hillux remap offers lighter, more personalized driving for each driver.
